In ceramics, spodumene is primarily used as a source of “lithium” (referred to as “lithia”) which acts as a flux, lowering the melting point of glazes and clay bodies, allowing for lower firing temperatures and promoting smoother vitrification; it can also contribute to brighter colors in glazes, particularly with cobalt blue, while also potentially creating a matte surface appearance
